Artist Statement:

​

“Chasm: An Ode to The Souls of Black Folks” examines the complexity of the black experience exploring the influence of the 1903 work of William Edward Burkhart Du Bois’ “The Souls of Black Folk.” Focusing on the “double-consciousness” lived by African-Americans that are persistently faced with racial oppression and operating often without agency in the dominant white society, simultaneously. Often reminded that they must maintain a lightness when in proximity to their own unjust persecution and slaughter.

There are two subjects in this single frame. Two black men, relatively around the same age experiencing life simultaneously, exploring both rage and joy. While using a double exposure technique to produce this frame, neither subject is aware of the other, further expanding the separateness but closeness of the black experiences creating the visual chasm.
