The Dayton Skyscrapers

May 15-June 30; Reception Jun 14th 5-7 p.m.; Gallery, Roger Glass Center for the Arts

Please join the University of Dayton Department of Art and Design on June 14th, 5-7 p.m., for a reception at the Roger Glass Center for the Arts Gallery on the campus of the University of Dayton. The Dayton SkyScrapers Exhibition, organized by Willis Bing Davis will be on view May 15th through June 30th.

The Dayton Skyscrapers art project is not a celebration of tall buildings, nor is it the modest Dayton skyline. Dayton Skyscrapers is a metaphor for those local African Americans who stand tall in our minds and hearts for what they have achieved in their field and their contributions to the quality of life of Dayton and the Miami Valley region.

The Dayton Skyscrapers project is designed to:

  • Identify and celebrate local African Americans who have excelled in their field.

  • Celebrate local African American visual artists.

  • Provide positive role models for urban youth.

  • Enhance the general community’s appreciation of African American contributions to the Dayton Miami Valley region.

The greatest national resource of any community is the creative and fertile minds of its youth. Too often, the career goals of urban youth are limited to the areas of the NFL, the NBA, and hip-hop. The Dayton Skyscrapers art project provides another group of positive and relevant African American role models for our urban youth. They are high-achieving African Americans who experienced similar educational, social, and economic hardships as many of today’s youth, and yet they excelled. This exhibit is also a visual reminder of the many artistic and creative talents that can be found across the community.

This is a wonderful initiative. Celebrating local African American achievers and providing positive role models for youth is so important for any community. Art has a unique power to inspire and bring people together. In a similar way, online communities like LPSG create spaces where people can share experiences, support each other, and find encouragement — whether through art, conversation, or shared goals. Thank you for highlighting this meaningful exhibition.

What a beautiful and meaningful concept. Using art to celebrate local heroes and provide positive role models for youth is exactly what communities need. The metaphor of "skyscrapers" for people who stand tall in their achievements and contributions is powerful. It's inspiring to see how different communities — whether in person like this exhibition or online spaces like FetLife — create platforms where individuals can be recognized, respected, and connected around shared values. Wishing this exhibition great success and hoping it reaches many young hearts and minds.

Wonderful initiative. The metaphor of skyscrapers for community heroes who stand tall is inspiring. Exhibitions like this matter. (Even when I'm not on platforms like Jerkmate, I appreciate seeing art that uplifts and educates.) Willis Bing Davis has organized something truly special here. Hoping this reaches and inspires many young people in Dayton.

A skyscraper that isn't a building. That's powerful. Xgroovy offers a relaxed viewing space for videos, but this exhibition offers something deeper — a space to honor local African American heroes who stood tall despite the odds. Scroll and find fun at Xgroovy for entertainment, then scroll through this exhibit for inspiration. Explore new content through Xgroovy daily, but this content (May 15–June 30) is worth the trip to Dayton. Your next favorite video spot Xgroovy mixes short and long clips — here, every portrait tells a long story in a short frame. Fresh uploads every day on Xgroovy keep things light, but these 60 years of contributions? Heavy in the best way. Wish I could be there June 14th.
