African Roots/American Fruits — National Conference of Artists Returns to Dayton

Dayton, OH — September 5–6, 2025


The National Conference of Artists (NCA), the nation's oldest African American visual arts organization, will host its landmark NCA 2025 National Convention, African Roots/American Fruits, in Dayton, Ohio. Spearheaded by celebrated artist and organizer Willis "Bing" Davis, the event will span two days at The Dayton Art Institute and Sinclair Conference Center, showcasing visionary creative voices from across the country.

This inspiring gathering will explore the enduring power of African and African American art in shaping identity, fostering a sense of belonging, and envisioning collective futures. Through exhibits, discussions, luncheons, and gallery tours, the convention aims to renew regional collaboration and reawaken NCA's legacy as a cultural force.

Headlining the event is Dean Mitchell, internationally acclaimed artist and keynote speaker, whose work bridges memory, activism, and Black heritage with breathtaking depth. Joining him are artists and thought leaders, including:

• James Pate, Dwight Smith, Dwayne Daniels, Shirley Woodson Reid

• Dinzulu Gene Tinnie, Debra Austin, Deidre Hamlar, Charlie Johnson

• Gallery tours of the Curtis Barnes, Sr. exhibit at The Dayton Art Institute

Supported by the Charles F. Kettering Foundation, The Dayton Art Institute, Sinclair College, and other institutions, this convention affirms art as a vessel of mental, physical, and spiritual strength, rooted in Africa and blossoming throughout the African American experience.
